Yogyakarta, Indonesia - During Chinese Premier Li Qiang's visit, UNU Jogja and GEM Co. Ltd. promoted urban mining development in Indonesia through the new faculty. At the international forum, “Tri Hita Karana: Inaugural Global Business Summit on Belt Road Infrastructure” in Jakarta on Sunday, May 25. This educational partnership is one of many collaborations between the Indonesian and Chinese governments.
As part of this collaboration, UNU Jogja and GEM Co. Ltd. have agreed to establish the Faculty of Future Metallurgy at the university's campus in Yogyakarta. UNU Jogja Rector Widya Priyahita explained to government, industry, and stakeholder representatives from both countries that the collaboration aims to develop talent and professionals in metallurgy.
"This faculty will focus on urban mining, an innovative approach to resource recovery and sustainable mineral management. Our goal is to strengthen the national, regional, and global metallurgy industry through technological innovation, knowledge transfer, and sustainability," said Widya in her opening remarks.
The Faculty of Future Metallurgy will have four main programs: Global Institute for Urban Mining: A think tank and policy institute for urban mining that will become a center for urban mining research in the Asia-Pacific region. The second program is the Metallurgy Innovation Laboratory. Academic Program; and the Creative Urban Mining Campaign Hub.
In developing this new faculty, UNU Jogja received impressive infrastructure support from GEM in the form of a nine-story building, modern and sophisticated laboratories, and student dormitories.
Additionally, GEM provides capacity-building support through scholarships for advanced studies and for UNU Jogja undergraduate students, as well as program development funding.
The UNU Jogja Faculty of Future Metallurgy is set to launch by the end of 2025, with academic programs beginning in 2026. "Through the establishment of this faculty, we are prepared to support the downstreaming of natural resources and promote industry-based economic growth. This initiative represents a significant step forward in metallurgy education and sustainable industrial development," stated Rector Widya, who was greeted with applause from the audience.
Following the presentation at the Global Business Summit, the agenda continued with a dinner and reception with GEM's founder and chairman, Prof. Xu Kaihua. Also in attendance were the coordinating minister for human development and culture of the Republic of Indonesia, Pratikno; the Indonesian ambassador to China, Djauhari Oratmangun; the general chairman of PBNU, KH. Yahya Cholil Staquf; the leadership of the Executive Board (BPP); and the Senate of UNU Jogja.
